OfferUp is a US-based second-hand trading platform based in Seattle, USA
OfferUp is a fast-emerging second-hand trading platform that allows users to trade unused items through the OfferUp APP, which is known for its simplicity and high security. Users can be both buyers and sellers, posting sales by uploading a photo of the item for sale, and the app will sort buyers from highest to lowest bidder, and if someone is interested in the item for sale, they can communicate anonymously using the app's built-in communication feature.
Once you enter OfferUp, you have two ways to select your location, one is automatically recognized by the system, and the other is by zip code entry. The location information becomes especially important since it is mainly for buying and selling in local neighborhoods. The system will also automatically display the zip code after it identifies the location by itself (finally, I found a good way to find the zip code). Once you enter the main page, you can start poking around for used goods, with the ability to search for all items, as well as sorting them by popularity ranking, and the accounts you follow, etc.
Communication can only be done through OfferUp. All communication should take place within the application. You should not give your phone number or email address to other OfferUp users. If a buyer or seller tries to transfer your communication to another application or service, please politely decline. You can effectively avoid being scammed.
When I first heard about the Offerup app, I was a little skeptical. I've always been more of an eBay person, so it took me time to get used to the idea that I could just sell my stuff without having to list it on an auction site. It's really easy to use, though! And now that I have my own Offerup profile, not only have I sold all of my old clothes but I've also made tons of new friends - which is great because before Offerups, most people didn't even know where our town was. Here are some pros and cons of the Offerup app that I've discovered through personal experience: Easier to use than eBay. No bids to worry about, so I don't have to constantly monitor the progress of my auctions. People can just buy it now for a flat price. If you live in a small town like I do, other sites don't allow you to list things unless you have an established reputation or other people vouch for you. Offerup's free and was created specifically for small towns like mine. It doesn't let you set an Ask price for your products, so when I sell something, I always kind of lose money on it. However, once I become popular enough that people start regularly buying my items, they'll buy at the lowest price possible. It's also hard to be successful with Offerup when you're in a small town and can't get enough exposure to get any sales at all. But they do have a great app called Real Estate which lets you list anything in your house or yard and includes all of the features of Offerup in addition to listing it on Realtor.
